Robert Legary Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert James Edward Legary, who lived a life filled with adventure, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Born in Lindsay, Ontario, on November 23, 1946, Robert’s journey took him across Canada and beyond, shaping a legacy that will be fondly remembered.

Raised on various Military Bases in Ontario and Germany, as well as the small town of Pilot Mound, Manitoba, Robert faced a challenging childhood that forged his resilience and adventurous spirit. He spent part of his early years in foster care, where he developed an unbreakable will and an innate curiosity about the world. He fondly recalled childhood memories of playing on the family farm, jumping into haystacks, and riding along in a horse-drawn wagon with the local milkman. These formative years shaped his lifelong love for the outdoors and self-reliance.

Robert proudly served in the Canadian Navy, where he excelled in basic training, earning the title of Best in Parade and serving as Bosun in his graduating class. His naval career led him to the Stadacona Band, where he played trombone while traveling across Europe, including a tour with the Governor General of Canada. He cherished the experiences of playing in military tattoos, enjoying jazz nights, and returning home at sunrise, memories he fondly shared with his family. He later joined the Calgary Kings Own reserve band and played with them for about twenty years.

After leaving the Navy, Robert pursued his studies in Forestry at the University of Alberta, where his thesis predicted land use changes in Kananaskis Park that have materialized over time since then. His time in Alberta led him to join the Calgary Police Service, where he served for 20 years in traffic enforcement, accident reconstruction, and community policing. His colleagues respected him for his mature, calm demeanor and fun-loving ways. A remarkable moment in his career came in 1999 when he survived a life-threatening encounter after a bullet ricocheted off his billy club—that one inch of steel along with Gods’ amazing grace granted his family 26 more cherished years with him.

Beyond his professional life, Robert was devoted husband, father and grandfather. He welcomed foster children into his home and later adopted his second daughter. His dedication to his children was evident in every aspect of his life—from supporting their interests in sports, music and technology to ensuring they had enriching experiences through travel and outdoor adventures. He was known for his storytelling, quick wit, and ability to engage in meaningful conversations with anyone willing to listen.

In his later years, Robert retired to Gold River, British Columbia, embracing a life close to the ocean and mountains in a warmer climate. He spent his days fishing, hiking, and enjoying the tranquility of the West Coast. He also worked as a courier, a fisheries observer, and a mattress inspector before fully retiring. Despite slowing down, his youthful spirit never faded—he remained fiercely independent, and lived life on his own terms, while still forming deep connections within his community and his saviour Jesus Christ.

Robert is survived by his faithful and loving wife Claudine, beloved children Ryan, Cobi, Kelsey, and grandchildren Sylvie, Raine, Isaac, Amy, Chase, Megan, Desmond and Emilia, as well as many extended family, and dear friends who will miss his wisdom, humor, and unwavering love. He was predeceased by his son Drew and parents Robert and Joyce Legary. He openly and proudly carried a deep respect for those who served their country.

A celebration of life was held at Westgate Foursquare Church in Gold River on February 22, 2025.

In memory of Robert’s dedication to service, donations may be made to a veterans’ organization of choice.

Rest easy, Bob. Guard the Gate, watch for your friends and family.
