Peter Schoonbeek
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Schoonbeek, who died peacefully at Cowichan
Hospice House on April 28, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on March 8, 1949, in Emmeloord, Netherlands, to Jan and
Anna Schoonbeek, Peter brought warmth, gentleness, and compassion into every life he touched.
Peter’s illness and passing were both sudden and unexpected—a heartbreaking turn for his family and
friends who cherished every moment with him. In the short time between his diagnosis and farewell, he
faced each day with grace, courage, and his signature quiet strength.
Peter was a kind and humble man, deeply devoted to his family and known for his
generous heart and calm, steady presence. He took great pride in his work as a Glazier at
Speedy Auto Glass and later as a trusted and well-liked driver for Vanfax.
But above all, Peter’s greatest passion was sailing. Being out on the water under sail was
his sanctuary. He poured his heart into building and maintaining his beloved trimaran,
Dutch Treat, and many of his happiest days were spent alongside Vicki, sailing out of
Ladysmith Harbour, exploring the coastline, and embracing the sunshine, the warm
breeze, and deep peace that sailing brought him. He was an active and enthusiastic
member of the multihull community, always eager for a friendly race to showcase the
speed, simplicity, and smooth handling of the boat he so lovingly created. His love of
sailing was not merely a pastime—it was a true reflection of his spirit.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Vicki; his son, Greg Pierce (Lise Anne); his adored
grandsons, Benjamin and Elliot; and his sister, Jean Schoonbeek (Alan Campbell). He was
predeceased by his sister, Antje Schoonbeek.
Peter’s gentle spirit, kind heart, and unwavering love for Vicki, his family and
friends will be remembered and cherished always.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Eagles Hall in Ladysmith on Saturday,
June 28th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All are welcome to come share
memories and celebrate the life of a truly loving and gentle soul.
