Nick Xylinas Obituary

NIck Xylinas passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in Courtenay, B.C., at the age of 86. Born June 6, 1939, in Rhodes, Greece, Nick was the son of Evangelos and Katina.

Nick completed his two-year mandatory Greek military service and later studied and worked as an accountant. Following his older brother Mike, he moved to North Vancouver in 1965. It was love at first sight when Nick met Angela while she was visiting her cousin Jack. They were married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Vancouver, B.C., on October 22, 1967. They welcomed their first son, Angelos, in 1971, and their second son, Mike in 1972.

Nick worked as a welding fabricator for 20 years in North Vancouver, remaining in the same home which he significantly renovated by himself. The family enjoyed many camping, fishing, and hunting trips to Telegraph Cove, Quadra Island, and the Sunshine Coast. In 1986, Nick and Angela began running their restauant, Kameros, in West Vancouver, where their sons also worked while attending school.

In 1993, embracing a new opportunity, the family purchased the Haida-Way Hotel in Port McNeill. After completing their university degrees, the boys moved from Vancouver to help their parents operate the family  business. In 1997, Nick's eldest son Angelos married Karen, and they were blessed with three children: Nicholas, Anthony, and Sophia. Nick and Angela were hands-on grandparents delighted to spend any and all time they could with their grandchildren.

In 2007, the family suffered the devasting loss of their son Mike in an airplane accident. After selling the hotel in 2008, Nick and Angela retired and purchased a second home in Comox. Angelos, Karen and the children had also settled very close by in Courtenay. Nick and Angela happily divided their time between Port McNeill and Comox. Family gatherings and holidays were frequently shared with Karen's parents, Ron and Anita; her brother Paul and his wife Deana; and their daughters' sporting and dance events.

In 2023, grandson Nicholas married Emily, and a year later they welcomed a baby boy, Theo- a great-grandson for Nick and Angela. Nick was deeply grateful to have his children and grandchildren living close by and cherished every opportunity to offer his wisdom and help.

Nick had a lifelong passion for fishing and spent countless hours on the water; sun or fog and rain, he was happy just the same; always with his loving wife Angela by his side. He was pleased when any opportunity would arise to take family and friends along with him on his boat; often for a very long eventful day. Gifted with a true green thumb, his vegetable garden flourished. He grew abundant delicious tomatoes, greens of all kinds, blueberries, sweet figs, and apples, and cultivated grapevines from which he proudly made his own wine. Nick was an avid follower of the news and enjoyed reading non-fiction; always eager to learn something new. He was a businessman at his core and loved a good investment opportunity.

Nick and Angela formed meaningful friendships in every community they lived in, and joyfully entertained family and friends, especially at Greek Easter. They also travelled extensively, both on their own and with loved ones.

Nick will be remembered for his lively debates, often accompanied by geography and history lessons, as well as for his guidance, incredible generosity, relentless drive, and tireless worth ethic - but above all for his unwavering love for his wife and family.

Nick was predeceased by his son Mike; his parents Evangelos and Katrina; his brother Dimitri; and his sister Maria. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Angela; his son Angelos and daughter-in-law Karen; beloved grandchildren Nicholas (Emily), Anthony (Kate), and Sophia; great-grandson Theo; his older brother Mike (Anna); and many cherished relatives.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Aitken Hospice at Ocean Front Village, with special thanks to Dr. Marcus Langhans and his wife Karen for their care and support.

Nick will be interred at the Courtenay Civic Cemetery.
