Michiko Young Obituary

Michiko (Kimura) Young, a woman of strength and determination, was born on October 22, 1941 in China. She left us peacefully on September 9th, 2024 in Nanaimo, BC surrounded by her family. Michiko's life journey took her from China to Japan at age four where she lived until she met her beloved husband of 61 years in 1962. They moved to Hawaii to California to Edmonton, where together they raised their three children. She spent the last part of her life on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo and the last two years living on a beautiful acreage in Qualicum Beach.

Michiko dedicated her career to working with the University of Alberta in the International Department as an administrator and translator.

Michiko's love for gardening, travel, and family moments brought her immense joy. Her family bonded over Sunday night dinners, watching favorite shows while indulging in Japanese cuisine. Michiko's determination was a beacon of inspiration, making their summers and Christmas at their cozy cabin near Valemount, B.C. even more special. Michiko would rise early to ignite the fire and venture down to the river, chopping a hole in the ice to retrieve water, ensuring her family's comfort and well-being, even in the absence of modern amenities.

Her passing leaves a void, but her legacy lives on through her husband, David Young, and their children, Christopher Young (Karen Young) Denise Young (John Paul Fillion) and Terry Hurst (Chris Hurst) along with her six grandchildren (Byron, Camron, Kristin, Colleen, Emiko and Naomi).

The family had an intimate gathering to celebrate the life of Michiko on September 14th; therefore no service will be held. She will be cremated and buried at Dragon Flower Mountain, Lions Gate Buddhist Priory (A Temple of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives) in Lytton, BC.
