Maura Dearing Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Maura Marguerite Dearing, who left us in the early hours of July 3, 2025, at Cowichan District Hospital. She was surrounded by immense love, the presence of her beloved partner Doug Morrison, and her daughter Sherra Dearing.

Maura was born on August 3, 1956, to Mae and Frank Hayes in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She raised her three children—Christopher, Amy , and Sherra —on her own until she met Doug, with whom she spent over 30 years in a beautiful, unconditional partnership.

Known by so many as the “cool mom” and “cool auntie,” Maura had a gift for making everyone feel special. She was the most loving and supportive mother, nana, friend, and partner. She did everything for everyone she cared about, always putting others first.

A passionate hockey fan, Maura’s cheers for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers could be heard from blocks away. Her joy and spirit lit up every room she entered.

Maura is survived by her children, Christopher & Gen, Amy & Josh, Sherra & Steve; her stepson, Kyle & wife Jasmine and her adored grandchildren, Kaleb, Jaydin, Kiera, Harlow, and Harper. She is predeceased by her precious granddaughter, Makenna.

A special thanks to Ev and Jim Foreman - her beautiful friends who spent many days by her side and plenty of hospital visits bringing her anything she wanted or needed. Her whole family appreciates all you did for her over the last few years.

Her family takes comfort in knowing that she spent her final day visited by many friends and loved ones, all of whom had the chance to remind her just how deeply she was cherished.

At Maura’s request, there will be no service in Ladysmith. A celebration of her life will be held in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory.

Her love, laughter, and unwavering devotion will remain in our hearts forever.
