Margaret Mary McGarry (née McLachlan)
May 27, 1944 – September 6, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Mary McGarry (née McLachlan) on September 6, 2025; peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Margaret was born on May 27, 1944, in Port Glasgow, Scotland, to Charles and Sarah McLachlan. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her sister Helen Benvin, her brother Jimmy McLachlan, her sister-in-law Kath McLachlan, and, most recently, her beloved son Brian McGarry.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, James “Jim” McGarry, her son David McGarry (Darlene), her daughter Elaine Wilkinson (Derek); her brother Charles “Charlie” McLachlan (the late Kath), her sister Elizabeth “Liz” Gordon (Fred), her brother-in-law Armido Benvin (the late Helen) and her sister-in-law Mary McLachlan (the late Jimmy). Margaret was the proud and loving “Granny” to her cherished grandchildren, who were the light of her life. She also leaves behind the McGarry clan of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends whose lives she touched with warmth and kindness.
Margaret created deep bonds with her family, her friends, her church and her community. She lived a beautiful life of love and service; from her advocacy in the Childcare field, to her countless hours of volunteer work and her commitment to those she adored so much. Her witty sense of humour and strong values will be deeply missed. She carried her Scottish roots with pride and shared her abundance of love, laughter, and generosity with all who knew her. She is forever in our hearts.
A Mass to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Ladysmith, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary in her memory.
