Margaret Hipwell Obituary

Margaret Rose Hipwell of Courtenay passed away at Comox Valley Hospital after a short stay in palliative care. Mom suffered from an aneurysm of the aorta for many years, which took her life on the morning of March 21, 2023.

She was born in Cumberland on July 19, 1941, to Lewis and Eva Clark and was the oldest girl of 5 girls and 4 boys. She married her husband George James Hipwell on November 8, 1958.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband George in 2011, her brothers Arnold, Gary and sister Betty. She is survived by her siblings Gordon Clark (Grace), Bob Clark (Linda), Elsie Kussauer (Seig), Judy Bowen (Bill), Linda Tobacca (Bruce). She is survived by her children Darlene and (Paul) Berry, James Hipwell, and Charlotte Hipwell (Jim Weir). Her grandchildren Nelson (Nicole) Bell, Fraser Bell (Ashley) and Riley Heinzelman. Wil (Britney) Burns, Cameron (Sarah) Burns, Ashly (Michael) Wiggins-Kitson. Great grandchildren Kerry, Jack, Savannah, Jordan, Luke, Kenzie, and one on the way.

They lived in Camp 5 for a few years before moving to their property on Tsolum River Road establishing their home and hobby farm. Even after dad’s passing mom continued to grow their vegetable garden and tomatoes and flowers; far too much for one person, and loved sharing the bounty with family, friends, and even new acquaintances. She loved to watch things grow. She mowed a little bit daily, making walking paths throughout the 10 acres until this last year when she physically couldn’t do it any longer. She loved to read and crochet. You never went hungry, she always brought out snacks and baking and made you a cup of tea or coffee whenever you came by for a visit. The candy dish was always full.

Thanks to Oliver Bouchard, Doris Cosman, and the friends and relatives who helped her with so many things and made sure she was okay. Thanks to the doctors and nurses at Comox Valley Hospital for being so caring and helpful.

An informal Open House, Celebration of Life will be held at her home on May 13, 2023, from 1-5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue.
