Margaret Buick Obituary

Ruth passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Friday August 20, 2021 at “The Views” in Comox, B.C.  She was born on April 6, 1929 in Trail, B.C. to parents Amy (nee Asselstine) and Andrew Waldie.

Ruth grew up in Trail with her seven other siblings.  Times were difficult in that era, but she was still able to make treasured memories with church and girl guide outings and camps. She completed high school there, and then went on to Normal School where she took her teachers training.

Ruth married John in 1952 in Rossland, B.C. where they started their family. Soon after, they moved to Prince George where their other children were born.  Ruth and John made many life-long friendships in their years in Rossland, Prince George, and the Comox Valley, which they cherished for years to come.

While raising their busy, young family, Ruth also taught elementary school.  After moving to Giscome in 1967, she continued to teach and took an interest in ceramics.

The family moved to Courtenay, B.C. in 1971. Ruth’s love for ceramics eventually grew into a business where she taught and sold her own pieces. Faith was also very important to Ruth - she was a member of St. George’s United Church in Courtenay for fifty years. Her passion for volunteering was very strong, and her generous heart touched many lives while providing service to her community.

Ruth loved to bake, and she made the best preserved fruit and pickles. She also enjoyed handicrafts like crocheting, cake decorating, calligraphy, needlepoint, and ceramics.

Family was very important to Ruth, and she treasured special relationships with the families of her children, and many of her nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Her most cherished memories included time being spent with loved ones.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband John, brothers Adam, Art, Allan, David, Glen, and sister Hetty, as well as daughter-in-law, Diane.
She is survived by her brother Jim, brother-in-law, Bill and sisters-in-law, Leona and Ena; children James (Donna), Gordon, Murray, Marilyn (Gerry) and Joan (Troy). Also survived by her grandchildren, who will lovingly remember her as Grannie B; Mathew, Jesse, Andrew; Nick, Cassie, Chris (and their Mom Debbie); Gillian, Hilary; Kimberly; Lauren and Quintin; great grandchildren Colten, Rowen, Carter, Briar and Killian.

There will be a joint service for Ruth and her sister Hetty who also passed recently, on Saturday, September 11th at 2:00 PM at St. George’s United Church in Courtenay.  In lieu of flowers, donations to St. George’s United Church would be gratefully appreciated.  https://www.stgeorgesunited.com/give
