John Edgett Obituary

John’s family is sad to announce his sudden passing at the Comox Valley Hospital. Born in the Comox Valley at St. Joseph’s Hospital, John invested his life and work into his family and the Valley he loved so much.

John had a keen sense of humour with an infectious laugh that brought joy to others. His knowledge of the Valley – its history and its residents – and the stories he loved to share about them entertained many.

John’s hard work ethic was something many people looked up to. John bought his first backhoe and started J.R. Edgett Excavating Ltd. His business thrived as he worked all over the Island and B.C. When he sold Edgett Excavating, he started a gravel pit and enjoyed his “retirement” doing what he loved: running machines and moving dirt.

He helped countless people in the community and there wasn’t a job too big or too small that he wasn’t willing to do for others. Because his contributions to the Comox Valley community were extensive, the Rotary Club honoured John with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. His projects included Simms Park, the Forbidden Plateau Reclamation Project, the Fallen Alders Field, The Seal Bay Park Trail, the Courtenay Fish and Game Club, and so many others.

John also sponsored many local sports teams including Beer League Softball teams, a Senior “C” Women’s Softball Team, and a Men’s Fastball team.

He was passionate about auto racing. John’s team became the first Canadian team to win a Nascar Winston West event. He was later inducted into the Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame.

He was proud of his beautiful gardens, his business ventures, and most of all, his family. He touched the lives of many friends over the years, and he will be missed by them all.

John leaves behind his wife Karen, daughter Jamie (Justin), his beloved grandchildren Brynlee and Olan, brothers Ross (Donna) and Phillip (Jean), and sister Lynda (Jack), sister-in-law Trudy, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Isabelle, brother Barry (Marian), and sister Shirley (Dale).
