Ian Douglas Mackay

Ian Mackay, age 58, passed peacefully in his sleep on November 25, 2025 in Campbell River, BC.

Ian was born in Edmonton in August 1967 moments after his twin sister Christina.

Raised in Sidney, BC, Ian went on to earn his BSc Chemistry from UVic (Co-op), and his PhD in Inorganic
Chemistry.

In 1993 Ian fell in love with Liz, they married in 1995, and together welcomed daughter Sarah in 1998.

Ian was very proud of Sarah, and often reminisced about the many summer adventures they shared. He was a quiet cheerleader of her academic and personal accomplishments.

The family moved to Calgary in 1998 for a short contract with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. This began a very satisfying 28 year teaching career for Ian.

After retiring to the ocean in June 2025, Ian spent his days gardening, kayaking, fishing, tinkering, and caregiving for his 96 year old mom.

Ian will always be remembered for his kind and generous manner, and was well respected by family, colleagues, students, and friends.

Survived by wife Liz Mackay (Eldred), daughter Sarah Mackay (Nik), mother Audrey Mackay, brother Neil (Lori) Mackay, sister Christina (Lyonel) Doherty, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was predeceased by sister Moira, father Donald, and brother Malcolm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ian’s name to your favourite charity, or the quiet support of a student in financial need would be fitting.
