Gordon Malcolm Matheson, born on October 5, 1938, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. He was the eldest son of Malcolm and Mary and spent his first five years in Mayo, Yukon, before moving to West Vancouver, BC. Where his younger brother, Don, was born in 1946.
Gord attended West Vancouver High, where he met the love of his life. Joanne. They married in 1957 and welcomed their sons, Douglas, in 1958, followed by Michael, in 1962. His loyalty and devotion to his family, particularly Joanne, his wife of 67 years, was unwavering and central to his being.
Throughout his working life, Gord worked diligently to provide for his family as an estimator and sales representative in the construction industry. As very young parents, he and Joanne forged a beautiful life for themselves, never losing their way through all the highs and lows of life. Gord enjoyed many activities and hobbies over his lifetime and was really good at so many of them but especially woodworking. He loved sports, especially hockey and tennis, and spent numerous years skiing in the North Shore mountains with Joanne. After retirement and a brief residency at Whistler, they moved to Vancouver Island and got to work on refining their golf and biking skills.
Known for his modesty, meticulous nature, and exemplary character, Gord held family as the most important aspect of his life. He was a selfless father, husband, grandfather, and friend who demonstrated immense strength and courage while combating Parkinson's disease for the past decade. During this time and especially for the last few years, his loving wife Joanne was his rock and supported him tirelessly. His legacy of generosity and loyalty will be deeply remembered by all those fortunate to have experienced his love.
Gord was predeceased by his parents and his brother Don (2013). He is survived by his beloved wife Joanne, sons Douglas (Dianne), Michael (Christina), six cherished grandchildren—Ginene, Alexander, Chloe, Alyssa, Gabrielle, and Julian—and five great-grandchildren.
Gord will be cremated and there is no service by his request. We will all miss your smiling eyes.
