Frederick "Fred" Muzin Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that I share the passing of Frederick (Fred) Muzin September 5th, 2025, at his home in Courtenay BC

Fred was born in Montreal January 19th, 1950. He graduated from McGill University before striking out on his own to BC. In BC he worked as a biomedical engineer at St. Paul’s Hospital where he became passionate about the Union movement. In 1993 Fred became president of HEU and would remain so for 15 years till he retired in 2008. Upon his retirement he was awarded the first ever HEU Social Justice award for his tireless contribution to social justice both locally and globally. After HEU Fred drove shuttle bus for Coast Mountain for 4 years before moving to Courtenay.

In Courtenay Fred continued his volunteer work by being active in Emergency Services Society, Coordinating shuttle drivers for Music Fest many summers and walking the picket lines in support of his fellow brothers and sisters when the need arose. In 2020 Fred was recognized by Canadian Blood Services for his 200th lifetime blood donation.

Fred had a strong sense of community and loved his province and his country with a passion.

Fred loved baseball and played with a senior softball team. He collected stamps since he was a young boy. He loved music especially Jazz and he played the clarinet. Fred also loved animals in particular bears and dogs especially his boy Chester.

Fred is survived by his loving partner Heather Bould, stepchildren Alana and Karen, his sister Sandi Shapira (Montreal) and sister Marlene Wiseman, brother in-law Phil (Ontario). Fred was predeceased by his parents Louis and Sophia.

He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, his union sisters and brothers across the country and the many friends he made in his lifetime.
