Ella Hass Obituary

Ella Hass, 92, of Campbell River, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at North Island Hospital Campbell River & District.  She was born in Anatolin, Poland, to Friedrich and Emilie Bader on October 3, 1928.  She lived there until WWII started where she and her family were displaced. She ended up in East Berlin with family friends and worked as a maid since she was separated from her parents. After the war, she moved to West Germany, again with family friends, where she met the love of her life, Wilhelm ‘Bill’ Hass, himself a war displaced person who came from Jekatrinowka, Romania.

It was during this 10-year period in West Germany she got married to Bill. While he was learning his trade as a master carpenter, she was a housewife and soon to be mother as she was blessed with her first child, Edeltraut, in 1953. But times were tough in post war Germany, so Bill sought his fortune in Canada and took his young family to Vancouver in 1956. Although learning a new language was a challenge, she was soon blessed with twin boys, Reiner and Wilfried in 1959.

In 1965 new opportunities for work presented themselves and the family moved to Campbell River, a community that she has lived in until the present. While in Vancouver she had been cleaning houses, but in Campbell River she also found part time work at local delicatessen’s such as Fred Fine Foods and the Earl of Sandwich.

Ella is survived by her 3 children, daughter-in-law Heidi, grandchildren, Timothy and Stephen, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Wilhelm, sister Emma, brother Siegfried and daughter-in-law, Teresa.  She enjoyed baking, socializing with friends, playing cards, and knitting. She was very active in her local Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Missionary Aid group for many years. Her favorite meal of the day was coffee with a nice piece of cake!

Ella was laid to rest at 1:00 pm on December 22 at Elk Falls Cemetery during a graveside Funeral Service conducted by Pastor Tom Kruesel.  Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Bethany Lutheran Church.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
