Edward Gatey Sr. Obituary

In loving memory of Edward James Gatey, Sr. who passed away peacefully on Friday, September
20, 2024 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after a brief illness.
Ed, as he was known, was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan to Michael and Mary Gatey on
October 22, 1929. He grew up in Saskatchewan and became a life-long Roughriders fan. He
played many sports himself, including hockey and baseball. But he especially enjoyed golf,
which he began playing when his father took him at the age of 14. This led to a lifelong pursuit
of the game, which he played well into his 90’s.
He worked for Canadian Pacific Railway until his retirement in 1989. He began as a telegraph
operator and then worked as station agent, and ultimately a dispatcher in Brandon, Manitoba.
In his youth, he also learned carpentry skills and undertook many building projects throughout
his life. In his final few days, he expressed his happiness with the life he lived and looked
forward to a peaceful end.
He will be missed by his children Edward, Jr. (Audrey), Cameron (Lori), and Leonard (Deb);
grandchildren Christopher, Sarah, Aaron, Michael, Marissa and Ally; great-grandchildren Emily,
Rose, Daphne, Lillian, and Alyssa; and many other friends and family.
Ed was predeceased by his beloved Muriel and grand-daughter Jennifer.
A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 1 pm at the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch #171 Ladysmith, BC
Special thanks to the staff at Nanaimo Regional General hospital who made him comfortable in
his final few days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nanaimo and District
Hospital Foundation.
