Betty was born in Turtleford, Saskatchewan in 1937, the 5th of 6 children born to Percy and Isobel Eamon. Her parents were both school teachers who taught in several small schools throughout rural Saskatchewan. She worked as a Nurse for 20 years in several Saskatchewan hospitals before moving to Moose Jaw where she attended the Saskatchewan Technical Institute (STI) for accounting.
