Dennis Billard Obituary

In Loving Memory of Dennis Steven Billard ~ February 6, 1946 – January 5, 2025

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dennis Steven Billard, who died suddenly on January 5th, 2025, at the age of 78.

Dennis was born on February 6th, 1946, in Virden, Manitoba, to his loving parents, Steve and Agnes Billard.  His childhood was carefree living in small town Saskatchewan village of Maryfield.  After graduating from highschool he moved on to Regina where he began his long career in the banking business starting with the Credit Union and then on with the Royal Bank. In Regina he met his future wife Sonja, from which they moved to Calgary where they lived for 34 years.

Dennis was a man of exceptional calm, kind character, loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sonja (nee Guliov), his two sons, Aaron (Spring) and Ryan (Kristie), and his cherished grandchildren: Nadia, Wyatt, Finn, Maci, and Marlo. Dennis was pre-deceased by brother Clarence (Marian) and is  survived by sisters Betty (Don) Swallow and Doreen (Ed) Naylen..  He had great affection for many nieces and nephews and their families and so many friends.
Dennis's life was marked by a deep love for family, nature, and the simple joys that made life meaningful.

After retirement and two years of camping and traveling across Canada and parts of the USA, and moving to Nanaimo he and his wife were involved in volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Nanaimo Theatre Group,  the Port Theatre, and Nanaimo International Jazz Society.  He was an avid lover of sports, with a lifelong passion for hockey and golf from childhood in Maryfield to  seniors Nanaimo Oceanside Golfers.  Whether he was playing a game or watching it with family and friends, Dennis’s easy going nature and affability were contagious. His love for the outdoors extended to hiking, biking, and long walks, shared with Sonja, spouse of 55 years, . His interest in listening to and watching live music reflected his appreciation for life and its beautiful moments. He was kind, caring, humble, and friendly, with a gentle nature that made everyone feel welcome and valued. He had not a mean bone in his body , a true lover of peace.

Dennis’s family is deeply saddened by his loss, but his legacy of love, kindness, and respect will live on in the memories he leaves behind.  Dennis will forever remain in our hearts. His memory will continue to inspire us, guiding us with his gentle and loving spirit.

A celebration to honor Den's life will be held  February 8th, at Bowen Park Complex, Club House (by the bowling green) 500 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm with friends and family coming together to share memories and stories and joy he brought.
