David Frederick Kydd

December 1, 1927 ~ June 5, 2021 (age 93)

David Kydd died peacefully at home on June 5th, 2021 with his wife Jan and daughter Morag by his side in his 94th year. David was born in 1927 in Delia Alberta, but lived the majority of his life on the West Coast of British Columbia. He was a singular man, loyal, passionate and kind. David taught himself to sail as a child on the banks of the Fraser River. He went on to be a founding member of the Gulf Yacht Club and sailed up and down the inside waters of the BC coast for many years. As a young man David began his working life in the logging industry as a whistle punk, he then trained at Vancouver Vocational Institute as a mechanical designer and draftsman and worked for more than twenty years designing sawmills. In his forties, inspired by a love of drawing, Dave began studying fine art. He graduated with Honours in Sculpture from the Vancouver School of Art in 1975 after studying art in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. David was a talented artist, draftsman and sculptor, fortunate to have found his true calling in life, he lived to create a beautiful body of art work. David was a friend to animals and formed long standing remarkable friendships with crows, owls and ravens throughout his long life. An unstoppable spinner of yarns, David had a multitude of stories gleaned from his many life experiences. He loved nothing more than to captivate and converse over a glass of beer and could match the best of the old time story tellers.

David is mourned by friends and family alike and he is survived by his wife and life partner of 50 years, Janet Hellerud who will deeply feel his absence after a lifetime of sharing art practices, sailing, and many wonderful memories. David is also survived by four children John Kydd (Linda), Lindy Mayer (Doug Laforce), Sheila Kydd, and Morag Kydd (Gerry Gauthier) and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. David was sadly predeceased by his lovely granddaughter Sarah Kydd. David is greatly loved and will be sorely missed by all those who knew him. We would like to thank the critical care team from VIHA for their speedy response and their wonderful work in keeping David comfortable in his last hours. Also thanks to Dr. G. Hatelid for his support and kindness.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

-By Dylan Thomas
