Darryl Lorne Bentley was born in Kelowna, BC on February 12, 1960 and passed in Port Hardy on July 12, 2023.
Lorne passed while doing what he loved to do, being a captain and being on the water. He had a sudden heart attack while captaining the Gulf Rival which was his passion. His love of the sea was evident his whole life from helping his grandpa on his commercial fishing boat as a teenager, then becoming a commercial fisherman himself as an adult and then working for Shearwater marine and Central Coast Marine Services. He moved to Denny Island in the mid 1990's and appropriately found his happy place. He worked for L&L Construction and a local logging company at Doc Creek. He began skippering the tug boat the Gulf Rival in the early 2000's. He was involved in many salvage and barging operations with Shearwater marine. He provided excellent repairs to many boating customers who often repeatedly requested his services.
His friends on Denny Island remember him for his sly sense of humor and love of cooking for them.
We cannot thank everyone enough for the emails of special stories about Lorne. It is with heartfelt thanks to his friends and coworkers for being at the end of their phones to help the family with all the arrangements that had to be made. Everyone has been so wonderful and supportive during this difficult time. Lorne found an oasis to call home and many special people there to call family.
He is survived by his daughter Keena Bentley and partner Dylan Wieduwilt, his son Joe Bentley, his granddaughter Abbie Wieduwilt, his sister Sandra Fedel and her husband David Fedel, his step brother Jeff Tonks, and his half brothers Eric Bentley and Larry Bentley.
A celebration of Lorne's life will be held on August 18th, 2023 on Denny Island.
