Charlotte Nelson Obituary

Charlotte Marie Ingrid Nelson (nee Carlson), passed away on December 23, 2025, in Nanaimo, B.C. at the age of 95.

Charlotte was born to parents, Carl and Marie Carlson, in Hamilton, Ontario on May 20, 1930. Her life was one of dedication to her family and her church. She and her late husband Roy shared a rich and meaningful marriage for 63 years, and were able to celebrate their 60th anniversary with their children and spouses on a cruise to Alaska in 2015. Charlotte graduated from the University of Toronto with Honours in music and languages, and went on to teach piano to many children in her community. She led various choirs, including her favourite; the Hand-Bell Choir at Highlands United Church, where she and Roy spent many years participating in as many groups and events as possible. She was also an active member of PEO, a nonprofit organization that helps women around the world pursue educational goals. During the 1980’s Roy and Charlotte ran a bed and breakfast, where they hosted people from all over the world, and Charlotte put her language skills to work when people from Germany or France came to stay. Roy and Charlotte moved to the Kootenays in 2000, where they were closer to their youngest grandchildren. They settled in Shoreacres, and immersed themselves in Nelson’s community, actively engaging in The Nelson Choral Society, Nelson United Church, and becoming as involved as possible with new friends and neighbours. They made many friends over the years at both Highlands and Nelson United; all very meaningful in their lives. Charlotte was also a talented seamstress, quilter, knitter, and needlework expert. She enjoyed watercolour painting, gardening, baking, and was also an avid reader.

Charlotte is survived by her sons, Reid (Gail), Kent (Rhonda), and daughter Valerie (Walter), her grandchildren Lisa (Bill), Kyle (Sarah), Melissa (Atli), Ashley, and her great grandchildren Olivia and Parker Nelson. She is predeceased by her loving husband Roy, her parents, as well as her brother Carl and sister June.

A private service will be arranged for family members at a later date in Nelson, B.C. Donations can be sent in Charlotte’s memory to the Alzheimer Society or to Covenant House, Vancouver
