Barry Herbert Obituary

We lost a great man after a very short battle with Cancer on February 7, 2024, at the age of 75. Barry is survived by his sons Frank (Lisa) and Jeff (JoAnna), and grandchildren DJ, Chaz, Andrea, Callie, Lexi, Remington and Jaycee. He is also survived by brother Carmen (Sandra), sister Debbie (Gary), sister Sherry (Lorne), brother Brett (Gail), and sister Roxanne (Noel), along with nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews. Barry loved and was very proud of his family.

Barry was born in Didsbury to parents Frank and Elizabeth (Blitz) Herbert, along with older brother Carmen, and younger sisters Debbie and Carol, who sadly passed as a toddler. The family resided in Elkton, operating the Elkton General Store. His Dad, Frank tragically died in a boating accident in 1969. Blitz later remarried to Gordon Phillips and Barry gained siblings Sherry, Darrell (passed 1987), Brett and Roxanne.

Barry married Maxine (Macky) McArthur in July of 1970 and together they raised Frank and Jeff in the Water Valley and Cremona area. The boys were raised on rodeo, baseball, and snowboarding, graduating from Cremona School like their parents had. Barry and Macky divorced in 2011.

Barry was a hard-working man who started hauling cattle and hay for his dad, then hauled logs, worked for Canadian Superior, Ledcor, and finally retired after proudly working 16 years for Volker Stevin. He always took great pride in hard work, and it was tough to convince him to slow down!

His friends were very dear to him. Tuesday was fishing day with the boys and the weekly loonie bet of first, biggest and most. He never missed volunteering during the Cochrane Lions Rodeo September long weekend. And we knew he couldn’t be reached on Thursday night because that was poker night at the Legion.

Barry retired to Black Creek on Vancouver Island in May of 2022. He loved retired life, fishing as much as possible with Jeff and Jo on the ocean, and often off the pier at Echo Lake. He loved being “the hired man” and claimed ownership over the lawns and the firewood, puttering in the yard. He also loved the opportunity to win a game of crib and he did, every time!

Barry would often say “it's the little things” that make life so great. And if you asked him, he'd tell you his life was a hoot!

A Celebration of Life for Barry will be held at the Cremona Hall on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00. Please come visit with us and tell stories.
