Arthur "Art" Forbes Obituary

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dear dad/grandpa/great grandpa Art, who passed surrounded by family on December 11th after a courageous battle with lung disease.

Art was predeceased by his mother Pearl (Sausen) Sadler, father Vernon Sadler and daughter Sandi Forbes. He is survived by Norma (Brown) Forbes, children Patti Charles (Dan), Ian Forbes (Anida), Brian Forbes (Stacey), Janine Lind (Derek), grandchildren Sadie, Brendan (Tiffany), Colin (Alex), Kate and Ruby, and great-grandchildren Sebastian, Blayke, Kaycie, Jhase, Maya and Max.

Dad was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in Powell River, where he and Norma raised their family. He worked hard and took good care of his home (he could fix anything it seemed) and his family. He once said there is nothing better than watching a child grow up. We spent many happy summers camping and exploring lakes and places near and far.

Dad worked in the pulp and paper mill from the age of 17 until his retirement in September 1991, starting on the paper machines before switching to the mill stores warehouse. He was a drummer in the award-winning company pipe band during the 1950s.

Dad loved to be active and over the years he was an avid fisherman, hunter, executive of the Rod & Gun Club, and taught the first CORE hunting program. He enjoyed square dancing, pool, darts, poker and winning! He was competitive and never ‘let’ the grandkids win, they had to beat him!

Dad was an adventurous spirit trying many things in retirement, from whitewater rafting to completing the Great Walk (aka ‘the burning boot’) a one day, 64 km logging road hike between Gold River and Tahsis, at 77! He ‘trained’ for it by walking the dog and playing poker past midnight the night before!

Art spent his later years in the Comox Valley and loved walks with his dog Ginger, playing poker with friends and having family near. Art was a great Dad, kind and humorous and loved us with all his heart, as we loved him. He will be deeply missed.

Thanks to Dr Williams, Dr Anderson, nurses Rob and Kira, and more, at the Comox Valley Hospital for their care and compassion.
